The Reframing Aging Movement

As we know, words matter. Discover how the Reframing Aging movement has identified and navigated how our language impacts people’s views about aging services and older adults in general. Learn more about the research-based framework produced and proven to translate overarching concerns of older adults and can forward priorities for the Aging Network.
The session will be taught by Reframing Aging facilitators, Tracey Colagrossi, Manager of the Village of Arlington Heights Senior Center, and Karen Kolb, Manager of the City of Chicago’s Senior Services. Learn more about what some states are doing to reframe aging and what we can do statewide and locally to advance this movement. Finally, help to identify how and why reframing aging can support Illinois Aging Together’s campaign for aging equity.

Tracey Colagrossi, MS
Tracey Colagrossi has over 20 years’ experience working with older adults in community-based settings. Ms. Colagrossi was the Program Manager then Director of the Hanover Township Department of Aging Services in Bartlett Illinois for 15 years. Ms. Colagrossi is the Senior Center Manager for the Arlington Heights Senior Center, a unique model of 8 tenant agencies serving older adults for almost 2 years Ms. Colagrossi is the Chair of the Executive Committee for the National Institute of Senior Centers with the National Council on Aging and a trained facilitator for ReFramed Aging Initiative. Tracey Colagrossi has an Associate Degree from the American Academy of Art, a Bachelor in Organizational Management and Leadership from Judson University, and a Master in Gerontology Aging Services from the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
Karen Kolb, MS, RFG
Karen Kolb, MS, RFG is the Manager of Family and Support Services in of Chicago’s Area Agency on Aging, the Senior Services Division of the Department of Family and Support Services. She administers a broad portfolio of in-home support programs for Chicago’s older adults that includes home-delivered and congregate meals, caregiver supports, legal services, and a variety of other programs.
A Gerontologist by training, Karen is active in several national organizations, including the American Society on Aging where she has served on the national board and in a variety of national leadership roles in addition to serving locally on the ASA Chicagoland Aging Roundtable. She is also an associate member of the National Academy of Social Insurance.
Karen holds a Master of Science in Human Development and Family Studies and is a Registered Financial Gerontologist. She has worked on innovative and award-winning services and projects with the National Council on Aging, National Association of Area Agencies on Aging, Chicago Community Trust, Walmart Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, National Institute of Mental Health, the Ford Family Foundation, and more. Her passion is helping older people and communities realize their latent assets, bring forth these capabilities, and to create initiatives and programs to help individuals and communities age well.
